In this video, we will explore Charles Darwin’s seminal work on evolution titled, On the Origin of Species, and hopefully dispel some of the confusion surrounding his ideas. For example, many people mistakenly regard Darwin’s theory of evolution as a declaration that life is progressing towards a perfect species. The phrase – ‘survival of the fittest’ – is responsible for this mistake. In common usage, the word – ‘fit’ – has positive connotations; being fit is better than being unfit. However, in the realm of Darwinian evolution, being the fittest simply means being the best adapted to a particular environment. If an environment favors weak, cowardly, and lazy organisms that know how to exploit the welfare system, then such organisms are considered the fittest. Η Δήλος, μολονότι ένα από τα μικρότερα νησιά του Αιγαίου (6,85 τετρ. χλμ.), ήταν στην αρχαιότητα το διασημότερο και το ιερότερο απ’ όλα τα νησιά επειδή, σύμφωνα με τον μύθο, εκεί γεννήθηκε ο Απόλλωνας-Ήλιος, θεός του ημερήσιου φωτός και η Άρτεμις-Σελήνη, θεά του νυχτερινού φωτός – δηλαδή εκεί γεννήθηκε το Φως, που για τους Έλληνες ήταν πάντα το πολυτιμότερο αγαθό. Οι παλιότεροι κάτοικοι της Δήλου έκτισαν (γύρω στο 2.500 π.Χ.) τις ελλειψοειδείς καλύβες τους στην κορυφή του Κύνθου (113 μ. ύψος), από όπου, στις ταραγμένες και ανασφαλείς εκείνες εποχές, μπορούσαν εύκολα να εποπτεύουν και να ελέγχουν τη μικρή κοιλάδα και τη θάλασσα ολόγυρα. Οι Μυκηναίοι, που ήλθαν γύρω στα τέλη του 15ου αιώνα π.Χ., έχοντας ήδη εδραιώσει την κυριαρχία τους στο Αιγαίο, αισθάνθηκαν αρκετά ασφαλείς ώστε να εγκατασταθούν στην μικρή κοιλάδα πλάι στη θάλασσα.
