The Eyes are the Gates

THE EYES ARE THE GATES

The eyes are the gates of the mind;
it is better to close them, now, to be careful,]
now that the day advances . . .

And the doors of the soul . . . the ears;
for prudence, too, let’s close them.
Let’s pray for the dead and for the old,

that they should have someone who loves them . . .
a little bit of love, guarantor of life,
no need for proclamations and laws. . .

Better a little fragment of life
than live idiocy and vegetation and loss of mind.
Patrizia Valduga, Italy (1953–)
