Το Τρόοδος

Η Κύπρος είναι αποτέλεσµα µιας σειράς γεωλογικών διεργασιών που διάρκεσαν δεκάδες εκατοµµύρια χρόνια. Η οροσειρά του Τροόδους σχηµατίστηκε από ηφαιστειακή δράση στον βυθό ενός µεγάλου, αρχαίου ωκεανού, γνωστού ως «Τηθύς Θάλασσα» πριν από 90 εκατοµµύρια χρόνια. Στη συνέχεια ανυψώθηκε περιπού 2000 µέτρα πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας ως στερεοποιημένη λάβα. Αντιστοιχα η οροσειρά της Κερύνειας ήταν καταβυθισμένη, όπως αποδεικνύεται από τους κοραλλιογενείς ασβεστόλιθους που κανεις συναντα εκει. Το νησί που σχηματίστηκε καλύφθηκε επανειλημμένα με θαλάσσιο νερό πραγμα που τεκμηριωνουν οι αποθέσεις ιζηματογενών πετρωμάτων πάνω από τρα ηφαιστειακά πετρώματα.
