George Seferis-Collected Poems, 3rd Edition

Αὐτὲς οἱ πέτρες ποὺ βουλιάζουν μέσα στὰ χρόνια ὡς ποῦ θὰ μὲ παρασύρουν;
Τὴ θάλασσα τὴ θάλασσα, ποιὸς θὰ μπορέσει νὰ τὴν ἐξαντλήσει;

The wound opens up again in my breast

when the stars descend as kin to my body

when silence falls under people’s footsteps.

Theses stones that sink in time, how far will they drag me with them?

The sea, the sea, who will be able to empty it?

Every dawn I see hands signaling to the vulture and the hawk

tied as I am on the rock that has become mine through pain

I see the trees breathing the black serenity of the dead

and then the smiles, the motionless, of the statues.
