Vespers

Ishuda

In the bay’s serenity
she basks, in her mate’s
sweet embrace, yet a wild voice
springs out of her essence:
bring me wave froth and
emotion, undulating Eros
topography of bottom
young woman, I am
longing for the youth’s firmness
leave others by fireplaces
while I wonder in vibrant
gull song old women reminiscent
of their mate’s memory
and embroider stories
as I get lost in adventure

Katerina Anghelaki Rooke – Selected Poems

THIRD DAY
September noon
small talk of the comrades
in the gentle sunshine.
The afternoon colours prepare
autumnal steps.
The joy of my fate: death
peace is the miracle
that mercilessly precedes.

Orange

Rhythm
Castanets in mid-air
tightly held in the fingers
of a severed hand and how
to match thunderous rhythm
with the spring and
our passing
onto the opposite shore
where our young God
sound in limb and
peevish awaits
shore filled with sounds
lustful and atavistic
of our songs and
in a rhythmic whirl
our young God will get up and
dance like a beardless brave
