Nikos Engonopoulos – Poems

Flight Example
a woman undresses
in the noise
of alligators
and sows her eyes
and sows her breasts
makes mothers cry
horses neigh
she tops the clocks
deadens the skies
pulls the hoists off her dress
she paints metaphysically
the coffin of the handsome boxer
she swears in the loss of lust
and tomorrow?
Nothing: there is no night without its hail

Tasos Livaditis – Selected Poems

Celebration

Sometimes I wonder why I write all these and if they’ll
ever console someone therefore I chose to kneel (this was
my own house) however soon I lost my composure with
the huge shadows of feathers on the wall while I was
all alone in the room; then I ran to the upper floor, even
higher to the balcony for my search. By the time I went
down the celebration was over. Then I opened the door
and I looked into the night serenely, since nothing was
changed and everyone lived the infinite deception
in their own way.

Impulses

Relief
What a relief spring is over
and the soldiers with their rifles
spouting sunlight through
their barrels left They came
in the midst of April as if there wasn’t
any other way for the spring
to come but with soldiers holding
rifles What a relief frost is over
and the chickadee dreams
on another nest of another chick
or two just another reason for
the red jib to unfurl just another
reason for the white chapel
to be repainted in whitewash
