Eteo opened his eyes. The first signs of daylight were visible through
the half-open blinds. He turned on his back and stretched his legs.
Momentarily, a sweet feeling of muscle tension and relaxation overtook
him. His eyes were still getting used to the daylight slowly flooding
his bedroom as the clock hit five thirty. he full glare of day wasn’t
far off.
He heard sounds of activity on the other side of the house. Logan,
his older son, must be getting ready to go to the office. He stretched
his legs across the other side of the bed, which was still cool and comfortable
to the touch. He didn’t feel ready to get up. The two other
men of the house must still be asleep; Alexander needed to
start getting ready around seven, and Jonathan didn’t have to go to
Simon Fraser University until ten.
He still wasn’t ready to get up. His eyes, wide open by now, perused
the room, but his attention was fixated on the sounds coming
from the other side of the house. His mind ran to yesterday afternoon
and his date with Susan. She had looked fabulous, tight, black-leather
pants accentuating her beautiful buttocks and a dark red blouse
tightly hugging the well-formed breasts she loved to brush against
him at any opportunity, even in front of others in the brokerage firm.
Susan with the fiery brown eyes and shoulder-length hair flowing so
smoothly, except when she wanted his attention. Then she would toss
her head to one side, causing her hair, as if by magic, to make a
strange flotation from left to right as if demanding his uninterrupted
attention. Susan, whom he knew, would love to take him at the first
opportunity … though yesterday she had made it clear it was that
time of the month. This wouldn’t have bothered him at all, something
he had also made clear to her, but she had insisted she didn’t like that.

“Tell me, sweet Frances, why, like most women, you want to ask something to which there is no answer?”

Her cheeks reddened and her breathing quickened. Her body trembled again in his embrace and she felt the need to sit. She pulled away from him a little more and sat down. Eteo gazed at her, expecting something to be said.

“Oh, Eteo” she mumbled at last, “let’s talk about this new issue, please, just that.”

Eteo was perplexed. He wanted to take her in his arms and give her another

kiss, but seeing how affected she was, he changed his mind and sat down again.

“All right. It’s called Nostra Ventures, still a month or so away, but you can certainly have some if you like.”

“As much as I want?”

“Well, not exactly, but something substantial. How many would you like?”

“I wouldn’t like to impose a quota on you. Just tell me what you could make available for me. That would work better.”

“Okay then, leave it with me, and when the list is ready, I’ll let you know,” Eteo suggested.

“Good, but give me a clue what to place, a hundred thousand?”

“No, not that many. I’m afraid I couldn’t do that.”

“Then …?”

“Say half of that to start, and if I get some rejections from others, I could add a few before the final list is prepared. How’s that?”

“I’m good with that, Eteo” she said and got up. They hugged. Frances offered her lips to him, and they kissed passionately. The kiss lasted a long time, and Frances was soon flushed and excited. Desire awakened in her too. Neither of them wanted to end this. Eteo let his hands travel down her body until she was ready to be conquered, ready to have him, here in his office.

Two days after his lunch with Mario, Eteo got a call from Cameron Gillespie, the corporate specialist at Pacific Trends, to inform him he had received the Nostra Ventures prospectus for a million and a half shares with broker’s warrants and with Eteo’s name listed as the broker in charge of the offering. After Eteo confirmed that he was indeed the lead broker, they arranged to meet in Bradley’s office.

Bradley browsed through the essential pages and then turned to Eteo.

“You’ve known these people for a while, haven’t you?” he asked.

“I’ve done a few things with them over the years. They’ve been good, and the stats on this one are very much in our favor, as you can see. I’ll send one third to a broker at Wolverton, and the rest I’ve already placed. No worries, Brad,” Eteo said.

“If you know them so well and you’ve been pleased with previous deals, why send a portion to Wolverton? Why not our own brokers?”

Eteo hadn’t expected the question, but he answered with as much poise as he could muster.

“I already agreed on this with the directors,” he explained. “But if it makes you uneasy, I could always go and negotiate with them on that issue.”

“Do that, if you don’t mind. We have a few juniors who would love to take part in a good deal, and don’t forget there are a few brokers here who follow what you do and would love a piece of this new baby of yours,” Bradley said, then added with a smile, “Great name, by the way, Nostra Ventures. Makes me think of the Mafia. Italians, I guess?”

Eteo had always admired Bradley’s down-to earth-attitude and practical point of view. He remembered a few years back getting involved in financing a cultured marble company run by a Greek fellow, and how smoothly Bradley had handled the situation when Eteo placed the stock in his clients’ accounts, all half a million shares, most of it on credit, and they had faced an unexpected situation when the police walked into the offices of the marble company two days before the listing and seized all their records for some taxation issue.

Bradley had stepped in and managed to arrange things so that Pacific Trends passed that month end with most of the IPO shares of the company held on credit over the month and into the new one until the taxation affair had been cleared up and the company got their approval for listing on the exchange. Eteo had then scrambled to collect all the outstanding moneys through sales of shares on the open market. To this day Eteo had never learned what accounting trick Bradley had pulled out of his hat to save the day, but the end result had been positive, which was all that mattered.
